Our Staff

As a camp accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), Oneka hires counselors that are 18 years of age or older, and many are 21 or older. Our ratio of counselors to campers is an excellent one to three, allowing the counselors to get to know their campers and give them individual attention. Most years, a high percentage of our counselors are former campers and returning counselors.

We also hire a number of English speaking international counselors. The cross cultural experiences that they provide add an extra dimension to the camp experience. Our counselor in training program hires junior counselors (Nekettes age 17) to provide continuity and training for former campers to become counselors.

Many of our counselors are education majors and have national certifications in the area’s they lead, such as archery, sailing, swimming and sports. Most of our staff and all of the waterfront staff hold American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid certification.

Counselors live in the cabins and tents with the campers and provide structure, support, and direction to their campers. Every counselor is also an activity specialist with specific skills to lead and teach a program activity. Along with cabin and program counselors, two fulltime nurses (RN’s) are available at all times, Program Director (responsible for daily schedules), and a food service staff for all meals.
